If you’ve spent time logged on to the World Wide Web lately, you’ve probably seen people talking about the newest social media app on the block: Vero.
The word 'Vero' is Italian for 'true' and the core idea behind the app is that it will provide a social media network that never runs ads and is not dictated by algorithms. Vero was actually established in 2015, however with the recent uproar about Instagram ending our favourite chronological feed, Vero’s timing to overtake could not have been better.
Users will eventually be expected to pay up in the form of a subscription fee however the first one million registered users received a “Free For Life” offer. "Our subscription model will allow us to keep Vero advertising-free, and to focus solely on delivering the best social experience instead of trying to find new ways to monetize our users’ behaviour or tricking them back into the app with notifications,” they say.
On Vero you can post about movies, music, TV, books, places, photos and direct links. You can also choose to share this content with either your “close friend”, “friend”, “acquaintance” or “follower”. “In real life, people are never presented with a one size fits all audience,” the company argues. “We share different things with different people.”
“Most social networks reduce everyone to a friend or a follower. This encourages us to only share the parts of our lives we think are the most interesting.”
“When you can control who sees what, you can behave in a way that is more natural, which we believe ends up being better for you.”
You’ll then be able to access the products that the people you are following are talking about. If a click-through results in a sale, Vero takes a percentage of the sale as a commission.
